In this video, we'll be exploring how to create a realistic sunflower for cakes using various crafting techniques. After attaching the petals to the flower centre in the previous part, the next step is to make the calyx and then add colour.
Next, we prepare the calyx for the sunflower using a 70mm and a 90mm cutter. We roll out some green paste and cut out two 90mm pieces and one 70mm piece. These are placed on a foam pad and shaped using a Dresden tool. The pieces are then carefully arranged and attached to the dried sunflower.
Once the sunflower and calyx is completely dry, we move on to colouring. We use a sunflower-coloured dust to give the petals a natural look. The dust is carefully brushed onto the petals and the edges of the petals to create a stripe effect. A soft green color is also added between the petals for a more realistic look.
The next step involves steaming the sunflower to enhance the color. Once the steaming process is complete, the sunflower is left to dry for about 2 to 3 hours.
This involves creating a natural looking stem using kitchen paper towel or a napkin. The stem is then thickened using floral tape and bent to mimic the natural growth of a sunflower. Leaves are attached to the stem at this stage and the entire stem is coloured using apple green dust.
