This video tutorial demonstrates how to create realistic sunflower centres using the Flower Pro Ultimate Sunflower and Daisy mould. Two options are shown - a brown, textured centre resembling the classic sunflower, and a dusted, pollen-coated centre in an artistic Van Gogh style.
Start by cutting 6 half-length, 18cm pieces of 18 gauge wire. Tap them level on the table then bind them together 2cm from the ends using light green floral tape. Bend the wires outwards at a 20 degree angle using pliers - this umbrella spokes effect will help attach the centre securely.
Take 40g of brown modelling paste, made from mixing brown sugarpaste and white flower paste. Put a little cornflour on half and press it into the sunflower centre cavity of the mould so it is level with the edge. Brush egg white glue over the wires then push the paste onto them, twisting slightly to embed them into the paste.
Carefully pinch the protruding pieces around the edge in pairs using tweezers. To give a textured effect. Leave to dry for at least 3 hours before painting.
When dried, mix brown gel colour with a little vodka and paint around the outer edge and over the top of the centre. Fill the middle with ground coffee or crushed black pepper to resemble pollen. Leave to dry for 8-12 hours before adding petals.
For a more artistic, Van Gogh look, the centre can be dusted with colours instead. Press 40g of cream modelling paste into the mould, hollowing out the centre using a ball tool. Leave to dry for at least 3 hours.
Dust the centre with lime green, autumn gold and chocolate dusting powders, layering the colours. Add sunflower and apple dusting powders over the top. Lightly steam the centre to make it sticky then sprinkle with yellow pollen or semolina for added texture. Leave to dry for 8-12 hours before adding petals.
