This video project provides a step-by-step guide to crafting spectacular gumpaste sunflowers. Part 2 will take you through the process of creating sunflower petals and assembling them into a stunning floral display.
Begin by preparing a yellow paste for modelling the sunflower petals. Add a small amount of orange sugar paste to the yellow petal paste to slow down the drying process. Incorporate the colour into the paste using vegetable fat or vegetable shortening. This will result in a beautiful golden yellow colour, ideal for crafting sunflower petals.
Attach the petals individually to the back of the flower using egg white. Foam pieces can be used to prop up the inside petals until petals dry, giving the flower a more realistic appearance.
Once the flower is assembled, it needs to be dried for about three hours. Then, turn the sunflower over onto a container to allow the back to dry. The entire process takes about two to three days, but can be expedited with the use of a food dehydrator.
By following these steps, you can create stunning gumpaste sunflowers that can be used as decorations on cakes or other confectionery items. With practice, you'll be able to perfect your technique and create beautiful, realistic flowers.
