Make A Bamboo Container With Air Dry Clay - Part 1
Create a stunning bamboo covered container that you can use as a desk tidy or as the centerpiece for an Asian-themed floral arrangement. This DIY project is perfect for showcasing green or dried bamboo, that will complement Asian flowers like the camellia, plum blossom, and Japanese maple.
Prepare the Can:
- Wash and dry an empty tin can. Remove any labels and paint it entirely with your chosen colour of acrylic or spray paint. Let it dry completely.
Moulding the Bamboo:
- If using air drying clay, roll it into a long sausage. Brush a minimal amount of vegetable fat into the bamboo mould. Place clay in the mould, using a cosmetic sponge to press so you can capture all of the detail and a Flexi Scraper to keep the edges of the mould neat and not overflowing with clay. Slowly release from the mould. Trim the bamboo to the required height of the can. Repeat to create more bamboo strips.
- For sugar paste versions, mix the paste with Tylose and vegetable fat before pressing into the bamboo mould, using piping gel to help adhere bamboo to the side of the cake.
Attaching to the Can:
- Apply a liberal amount of PVA glue or piping gel to the back of each bamboo strip. Attach each strip to the outside of the can, ensuring they're tightly pressed and evenly spaced to cover the entire surface. For gaps, mould smaller or medium-sized bamboo.
Finishing Touches:
- Once all bamboo strips are in place and the adhesive has dried, paint over them with diluted acrylic paint for a natural look. Seal with unscented hairspray and apply a finish like Sculpey Satin Glaze for durability.
- If using for a floral arrangment glue a piece of foam inside the can and fill with rice or lentils to stabilize. For permanent displays, consider sealing with clear resin.
This project not only recycles a common household item but also adds a unique, personalized touch to your Asian floral arrangements, perfect for home décor or simply as a desk tidy.
