You will also need the following equipment:

  • 6 inch and 4 inch cakes, prepared with ganache or buttercream ready for decoration
  • 750g of white fondant
  • 55g of flowerpaste
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Edible glue
  • Cornflour
  • Royal icing
  • Edible paint- white, pink, blue, yellow, and green
  • Brown food colour
  • Craft Knife
  • Paintbrush
  • Rolling pin
  • Dowels
  • Dresden tool

Making the bottom tier

Rub a thin layer of vegetable shortening over the prepared cake. Roll out 100g of fondant and cover the top of the cake, trim around the edge with your craft knife.

Colour 250g of fondant with the brown food colour, and use the wood panel mould to cover the tier, dusting the mould with cornflour first. Leave it to firm.

Take your edible paints and mix a little white with the blue, pink, and yellow. Roughly paint the wood panels making sure not to cover the whole panel with paint. Dowel the cake.

Making the top tier

Again rub a thin layer of vegetable shortening over the cake. Cover the top tier with 200g of white fondant, set aside to firm.

Make the dream catcher

Use 25g of flowerpaste with the Rococo topper mould, dusting first with cornflour. Take 6g of flowerpaste coloured brown and roll into a rope and wrap around the topper. Glue in place. Use the brown food colour to paint the main pattern on the topper.

Make a large flower swag from the Rose Medley mould, glue to the dream catcher and paint with the same colours as you used earlier adding green to the leaves.

Assemble the cakes

Attach the dreamcatcher to the top tier using royal icing and leave to set.

Separate 6g of flowerpaste into 3 balls, one slightly larger than the others. Make into flat teardrops, then pinch the rounded ends into a quil shape. With a dresden tool make small marks from the quill end to the pointed end and add two lines running down the center. Make a few random slits with a craft knife. Then set aside to dry.

Paint the edge of the feathers with the same paints as before.

Take 14g of flowerpaste and separate it into 7 balls, keep 3 white and the others colour blue, pink, green and yellow. Roll each into ropes, rolling the coloured ropes flat to make ribbons, trimming the sides straight if necessary. Cut to different lengths and glue to the dreamcatcher, pinching just below where you glued.
