Easy Log Slice & Bark Texture For Yule Logs & Cookies
In this video, the focus is on creating a variety of delightful confections using the Flower Pro large and medium wood slices and the continuous bark mould. These tools can be used to craft cookies and cakes that resemble tree trunks, complete with realistic bark and other woodland details.
To start, consider crafting bark cookies. These cookies are designed to resemble tree bark, with some featuring inlays for added detail. They are particularly suitable for woodland-themed weddings or rustic events. To create these cookies, begin with 50 grams of either milk chocolate modelling chocolate or milk chocolate coloured fondant.
When working with cookies, it's often preferable to use modelling chocolate as it offers a more pleasing taste than fondant. Roll the chosen material into rounds and then into squares, approximately the size of the cookie cutter. For this project, a 9cm cookie cutter is used, but the size can be adjusted according to preference.
Next, use the continuous bark mould to create the bark texture. Apply a small amount of vegetable shortening to the mould before pressing the modelling chocolate or fondant into it. Use a cosmetic sponge to ensure an even press. If making smaller cookies, fill the mould with 100 grams of fondant and cut out two or three at the same time. To add a personal touch, consider engraving initials or a name into the bark using a cutter. Be gentle and aim for a natural look rather than perfection.
For a different effect, try creating an inlay. This technique can also be applied to cakes. It involves 'carviing' into the bark and peeling it away to reveal the natural colour underneath. This can be particularly effective on wedding cakes where a heart shaped can be cut out and the contrast can be more easily seen.
To create a mini bûche de Noel, start with a Swiss roll. This can be made from scratch or purchased from a store. The Swiss roll should be covered with a layer of buttercream or ganache before being covered with the bark texture. Once the bark texture is made using the mould, apply it to the Swiss roll. This can be done by rolling the Swiss roll over the textured fondant or modelling chocolate.
