This video tutorial was originally filmed as a livestream for the Flower Pro Members Club. Please be aware this club has since closed. This video has been re-posted here for educational purposes.
This tutorial guides you through the creation of the bud, calyx, rose leaf, and thorn of the David Austin Rose. The final section covers the finishing touches that bring the rose to life.
To create the bud start with a half-length 20-gauge wire and construct a floral tape bud. Shape a small ball of paste into a cone and rotate it in the medium cone cavity of the Flower Pro Rose Cones and Thorns Mould. Vein both sides of one of the petals, frill the edge, and pleat and pinch to create a compact frilled top.
When adding a calyx roll out green and white paste, cut into sections for the medium calyx, and press into the calyx mould. Attach the two non-serrated sections (arms) then the head and legs to the flower. Press paste into the medium ovary mould, remove, and slide up the wire so the ovary connects with the calyx.
For leaves roll out green paste and cut out three XL rose leaves. Insert a 26-gauge green wire halfway into the leaf and mould at the base. Press the leaf into the Flower Pro Multi Leaf Veiner, remove, soften the edge, and pinch to a slight taco shape. Once dry, attach the leaves at a slight angle and dust with green.
Press green paste into the thorn cavities of the Flower Pro Rose Cones and Thorns Mould, remove, and attach with softened paste or super bond (glue). Dust the thorn base with green and the tips with rose colour.
Dust darker colour on the petal edges, light green in the centre, and a darker green stripe down the calyx. Steam to set colours and complete your David Austin Rose.
