One of the most important aspects of this craft is the creation of rose cones, the foundation of any stunning sugar rose. This video will guide you through the process of crafting perfect rose cones using the innovative Flower Pro Rose Cone and Thorn Mould.
Developed in collaboration with Chef Nicholas Lodge, this mould is a versatile tool that is indispensable in the sugar flower artist's toolkit. This mould is not just for roses; it can be used to create cones for a variety of flowers, including dahlias, lily buds, magnolia buds, and chrysanthemums. It features three different sized cavities for crafting cones and a dedicated section for creating realistic thorns.
To begin, you'll need a wire cut to seven inches in length. The gauge of the wire depends on the size of the cone you're creating: 22 gauge for the small, 20 gauge for the medium, and 18 gauge for the large. This wire will serve as the backbone of your rose cone, providing stability and structure.
Next, you'll need to create a floral tape bud at the end of your wire. This bud is created by wrapping floral tape around the end of the wire, creating a small bulb. This bud will provide a base for your cone, ensuring it has a solid foundation.
The size of your paste ball, which will be pressed into the mould to form the cone, is determined by the size of the cone you're creating. For the small cone, you'll need a number seven small size piece of paste. For the medium cone, a number eight small size piece of paste is required, and for the large cone, a number eleven size piece of paste is needed.
Once your paste ball is prepared, press it into the mould, ensuring it fills the cavity completely. A cosmetic sponge is recommended for this task, as it ensures an even, level fill. Once filled, apply a bit of egg white to your floral tape bud and press it into the paste in the mould. The egg white acts as an adhesive, securing the bud to the paste.
After the bud is secured, remove the cone from the mould and allow it to dry. A food dehydrator is an excellent tool for this task, as it ensures the cone dries evenly and maintains its shape. Once the cone is dry, it's ready to be transformed into a beautiful sugar rose.
Mastering the art of crafting rose cones is a crucial step in your sugar flower making journey. With the Flower Pro Rose Cone and Thorn Mold and these techniques, you'll be creating stunning, consistent rose cones in no time.
