In this video you will see how to create realistic toadstools and mushrooms using sugar paste. This video guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to mould, colour, and assemble these cake decorations. We can create a stunning array of fungi that will add a touch of nature's charm to any cake or confectionery.
To create the stem, roll the a light coloured paste into a cylinder shape and insert it into the stem mould. Press the paste firmly into the mould to ensure it takes on the detailed texture. Carefully remove the moulded stem and set it aside to dry. Now repeat the process, but before removing from the mould add some edible glue and stick the dried half. Flex the mould to release. You should now havve a fully 3D stem.
For the cap, roll the paste into a ball and press it into the cap mould. Again, ensure the paste is pressed firmly into the mould to capture all the intricate details. To add texture to the gills of the mushroom or toadstool, a veiner tool is used. Press the veiner tool into the underside of the cap, creating a series of lines radiating out from the centre. Carefully remove the cap from the mould.
Once the moulding process is complete, allow the pieces to dry overnight. This will ensure they are firm enough to handle for the colouring and assembly stages. The drying time may vary depending on the size of the pieces and the humidity of the environment.
Next, focus on colouring the pieces. For the classic red toadstool, start by using chocolate brown on the inside. This can also be done with white on top and brown paste on the inside. To create a variety of toadstools, different colour combinations can be used.
Once the pieces are coloured, they are ready for assembly. It is recommended to colour the two components individually before assembling them. Use paste softened with water to make a glue that will hold the cap and stem together.
After assembly, the pieces should be steamed. The steam sets the colour and gives the pieces a natural look. Once steamed, the pieces can be glazed using spray lacquer or leaf glaze.
With these techniques anyone can create a beautiful array of toadstools and mushrooms to use on cakes, confections, and even craft projects.
