Stamping Your Image
Start by stamping your image using a permanent black ink (Andy uses VersaFine Onyx Black) onto Cosmic Shimmer Smooth White Stamping Card. Apply ink evenly across the stamp, press down on the card, and lift to reveal a crisp, detailed print. Let the ink dry fully before moving on.
Pencil Shading for Depth
Using a soft graphite pencil (Andy uses a Faber-Castell 14B), begin shading the robots. Work from the outer edges toward the centre to create a highlight down the middle of each figure. Andy uses the side of the pencil for softer shading. Blend the graphite with a paper stub to smooth harsh lines and unify the gradient, giving each robot a subtle metallic sheen. Repeat for both characters and any surrounding elements like oil cans or the ground.
Adding Ink with Watercolour Washes
Now bring in Cosmic Shimmer Water-Based Inks. For the blue robot, Andy mixes Mushroom Grey and Tuscan Teal (50:50 with plenty of water). For the pink robot, he combines Mushroom Grey with Raspberry Ripple to tone down the brightness. Use a soft brush (Andy prefers squirrel hair) and work the ink over the shaded areas, building colour gently from the edges inward. The graphite underneath enhances the depth and shadow. Let the layers dry between applications and adjust intensity as desired
Grounding the Scene
Create a sandy coloured ground effect with a mix of French Mustard and Mushroom Grey ink, heavily diluted. This soft base sets the stage for the robots and oil cans. Once dry, Andy deepens areas with stronger washes and adds tiny ink details using a fine liner pen.
Finishing Touches
Hearts: Painted with opaque red acrylic paint for bold, clean coverage. Rust Effects: Use diluted French Mustard for a rust wash, then add concentrated ink in small areas for realistic weathering. Apply to the robots, cans, bolts, and background elements for added detail and charm. Details: Andy enhances shadows, textures, and grass tufts with a fine liner for extra definition.
The Final Piece
The finished design is mounted on grey cardstock to complement the industrial tones. While Andy used specific colours, the Cosmic Shimmer Water-Based Ink range includes 20 colours, giving you endless options for customising your own scene.
