Custom vase displays are a delightful way to showcase sugar flowers on top of a cake. Learn how to effortlessly fashion vases, bowls, and even pots tailored to your aesthetic desires in this video tutorial.
Prepare the Styrofoam Base
Start with a 96mm Styrofoam ball, trim a small section from the base for stability, and mark a circumference of 65mm from the trimmed area. Use a serrated knife or a hot wire cutter for precision cutting. Repeat the process with a 76mm ball, trimming and cutting at 30mm from the base.
Fondant Covering
Mix 170g of rolled fondant with 1/4 teaspoon of tylose and a small amount of vegetable fat. Roll two-thirds of this mixture into a 20cm circle. Apply piping gel to the fondant, then drape it over the larger Styrofoam piece, smoothing out pleats and trimming excess at the top.
Assembling the Base
For the vase's base, use the remaining fondant to cover the smaller Styrofoam piece similarly. Roll additional fondant into a 9cm strip, apply piping gel, and wrap it around the base piece, sealing the edges.
Securing the Pieces
Connect the top and base of the vase using a skewer for alignment and stability, ensuring the pieces are well adhered with piping gel or glue.
Decoration and Customization
Allow to dry then decorate as desired using Katy Sue Designs and Flower Pro moulds with a Wedgwood theme in white flower / gum paste or modified rolled fondant for non-floral items. You can adapt the theme and moulds based on your colours. Sponge for a simple marble effect, airbrush, paint, make all in yellow or grey and paint gold or silver – there are so many options! A strip or moulded element can be added around the top rim then add green paste to resemble moss in which you can arrange your flowers.
This video guides you through the creation of vases that complement any floral arrangement. These techniques ensure your floral displays stand out with a personal touch. Watch now and transform your floral presentations into works of art.
