Create the Faux Wood Panel Background
Begin with a piece of cardstock cut to fit the front of your card. Sheena combines Dark Walnut water-based ink with a muted turquoise-blue ink to create an aged wood colour, although the shades can easily be changed to suit your project. Apply a diluted brown base across the cardstock, leaving no white areas showing. Once dry, use a large flat brush with very little moisture to drag brown and blue vertically across the surface. Keep the brushstrokes irregular and visible rather than blending everything smoothly – these streaks are what begin to create the appearance of wood grain. For a more weathered finish, lightly dry-brush white gesso over selected areas. Use long, straight strokes so the effect still follows the direction of the wood. When everything is dry, use a dark brown pencil and ruler to divide the background into planks. Vary the lengths and joins rather than making every section identical. A lighter pencil can be added sparingly alongside some edges to create a subtle highlight and extra depth. The same technique could easily be adapted for weathered beach wood, rustic backgrounds or mixed media journal pages simply by changing the colours.

Stamp and Age the Duck Portrait
Use an oval centre from the Gilded to Grunge Frames and stamp the main Duck the Halls character in black ink. Sheena gives the image an aged portrait effect by blending a warm neutral ink across the cardstock, followed by a deeper brown around the outer edges. Keep the centre a little lighter so the duck remains the focal point. To lift the colour back from the stamped image, add plenty of clean water with a brush and blot quickly. Avoid scrubbing the cardstock – the water loosens the surface colour so it can be lifted away while keeping the paper in better condition.

Paint the Duck
The duck only needs a relatively limited palette. Use very diluted brown and black to introduce soft shading around the white feathers, then add warm yellow tones to the beak. Sheena colours the scarf with plum, adding contrasting yellow and green details for a slightly eccentric festive look. White gouache is particularly useful here. Because it is opaque, it can be painted back over the image to brighten the feathers and restore highlights after the initial shading. Keep some of the original stamped detail visible and use a fine liner afterwards where extra definition is needed. Finish with a tiny white highlight in the eye and, if you want a more aged appearance, lightly splatter diluted brown ink across the portrait.

Customise the Ornate Frame
Choose an aperture frame from the Cosmic Shimmer Gilded to Grunge Frames & Flourishes. These pre-cut foiled elements are designed to be altered, so inks can be blended over the cardstock while the metallic detail remains visible. For the warmer version, Sheena applies a soft antique colour over the frame before adding deeper shading around the inner and outer edges. This creates a subtle vignette and gives the impression of an older, more dimensional frame. A second version uses cooler blue-grey and darker tones with the silver frame, proving how dramatically the same design can change simply by altering the colour palette. For even more dimension, place the frame face-down on a soft surface and gently work around the centre with a ball tool. A slight curve makes the frame feel less like flat cardstock and more like a decorative moulding.

Add Festive Embossed Details
Use the smaller decorative stamps from Duck the Halls to add festive corners to the background. Prepare the cardstock with an anti-static bag or a generous dusting of cornflour, then stamp the decorative elements using clear embossing ink. Cover with gold or silver embossing powder, tap away the excess and heat until melted. Repeat the elements to build decorative corners around the card.

Assemble the Card
Position the completed duck portrait behind the aperture and decide where the frame will sit before gluing anything permanently. Attach the portrait to the faux wood background, then raise the frame using two layers of 3D foam pads. The extra depth helps reinforce the idea of a traditional framed portrait. A small embossed sentiment plaque beneath the frame adds a stately-home touch before the entire panel is mounted onto the A5 card blank. The finished project can be created in either warm gold and antique tones or cooler silver and blue-grey shades, giving the same wonderfully eccentric duck portrait two very different personalities.

A Christmas Stamp with Plenty of Character
