Egg Basket Cake Tutorial – How to Decorate an Easter Basket Cake using Silicone Moulds

Preparing Your Silicone Moulds
For best results with all Katy Sue silicone moulds:
Lightly dust the mould with cornflour or brush very lightly with vegetable fat.
Press firm fondant firmly into the mould using your fingers, Dresden tool or rolling pin.
Flex the mould gently to release.
Allow the moulded piece to dry before assembling onto a cake or cookies.

1. Cover the Cake with a Basket Weave Texture
Prepare the Katy Sue Rattan Basket Weave Silicone Mould as described above.
Press pastel-coloured firm fondant into the mould. Roll firmly with a rolling pin.
Remove excess with a palette knife.
Flex to release the continuous basket weave panel.
Carefully wrap the textured fondant around your crumb-coated cake.
Trim neatly at the seam and smooth gently into place.
Because the mould creates a continuous texture, it gives a realistic basket weave finish with minimal joins.

2. Add Rope Borders for a Finished Edge
Prepare the Katy Sue Ropes & Knots Silicone Mould (which includes three rope sizes).
Press firm fondant into your chosen rope size.
Release then attach around the top and base of the cake using edible glue.
This frames the basket beautifully and enhances the woven effect.

3. Create a 3D Rope Handle
To form the basket handle, use the Katy Sue Ropes & Knots Silicone Mould to create two equal lengths of rope.
Attach the two lengths together using edible glue to form a fully 3D rope.
Lay the rope over the side of a round cake tin and allow to dry to form a curved handle shape. Allow to dry completely until firm.
Once dry, attach securely to the cake with edible glue. 

4. Make Perfect Egg Decorations
Using the Katy Sue Eggs Silicone Mould prepare the mould as above then press firm fondant into the egg half mould cavities. Flex the mould to release. Allow the halves to dry.
Attach two matching halves together with edible glue to form a complete 3D egg then position to the cake using edible glue .
The mould creates three different egg sizes, perfect for a natural Easter basket arrangement.

5. Create Decorative Flowers
Prepare the Katy Sue Flowers Silicone Mould, prepare the mould as above.
TOP TIP! To create yellow flower centres, press yellow fondant into the flower centre area of the mould first. Then press white fondant into the rest of the cavity. Release from the mould for a two-colour flower in one easy step.
Allow to dry before attaching.
You can also create additional flowers by rolling thin strips of fondant the ruffling into a loose floral shape by hand.
Fit the fondant flowers into the gaps between the eggs using edible glue, arranging naturally as if nestled inside the basket.

Colour & Finishing Tips
Use a very small amount of edible gel colouring mixed into white fondant to achieve soft pastel shades.
Firm fondant (such as Renshaw Extra) creates sharper detail and is easier to release from moulds.
Allow moulded elements to dry before assembly.
