In this video, we conclude the creation of realistic poppies, suitable to be used in floral decorations for cakes. You will need the elements created in Parts 1 and 2, so watch those first if you haven't already. This video will walk you through the process of colouring and the final assembly.
Dust apple green at the base of the small petals and ruby red at the edges. On the petals dust green at the base, orange at the bottom, red across the middle third and ruby red at the edges. Mark lines near the base with the thick end of a black food art pen.
Brush the seed head with eucalyptus, grey and light brown dusts. For the open buds, dust the sides of the red buds orange and ruby red on the tip, then green over the calyx and dark green at the base.
As an optional step, brush the stems with confectioners glaze then sprinkle with semolina, coloured with dark green dust, to add a natural texture.
When it comes to assembly, attach four petals around the flower centre, adding one petal at a time and taping around. Once assembled, steam to set the colouring. Tape in a selection of buds, leaves and seed heads. If inserting into a cake, trim the wires to suit the depth of the cake. Cut a food-safe poly dowel the same depth of the cake and push into the cake followed by your floral arrangement.
