Sponge Painted Backgrounds with Sheena

Create Stunning Sponge Painted Backgrounds

Backgrounds are the foundation of countless cardmaking and mixed media projects, and few techniques are as versatile, beginner friendly and effective as sponge inking. Using simple everyday materials and a handful of Cosmic Shimmer products, it is possible to create richly layered backgrounds with depth, texture and metallic highlights.

Lapis Inspired Sponge Painted Background

In this tutorial, two distinctive backgrounds are created using a simple kitchen sponge. The first combines warm fiery tones of yellow, red and brown, while the second is inspired by the rich blues and gold veining found in lapis lazuli stone. Both designs are finished with Cosmic Shimmer Gold Mica Pigment to add beautiful metallic shimmer and dimension.

Instructions

General Tips

  • Use heavyweight mixed media cardstock or watercolour card of at least 300gsm.
  • Always start with the lightest colour and gradually build darker shades.
  • Avoid overworking the inks to maintain natural variation and texture.
  • Keep separate water containers for inks and mica pigments to prevent unwanted shimmer contamination.
  • Dry backgrounds thoroughly before removing masking tape to avoid tearing the cardstock.
  • Refer to photographs of natural materials, such as lapis stone, for inspiration when building colour and texture.

Preparing the Sponge
A standard kitchen sponge works perfectly for this technique. Tear away sections from the sponge to create an irregular surface, removing any straight edges. This helps produce more natural-looking patterns when applying colour to the cardstock. One sponge can be cut into several smaller pieces, making it an economical crafting tool.

Creating the Fiery Background
This warm-toned background uses Cosmic Shimmer Water-Based Inks in French Mustard, Firecracker Red and Dark Walnut. Begin by securing mixed media cardstock to the work surface with painter's tape. Thoroughly wet the sponge, then squeeze out most of the water so it remains damp but not dripping.

Apply French Mustard across the majority of the cardstock using a dabbing motion. This lightest colour forms the foundation of the background and provides the warm glow beneath the darker tones. Next, apply Firecracker Red over sections of the yellow, allowing the colours to blend naturally. Avoid creating regular patterns and instead build up random areas of colour for a more organic appearance. If any areas become too intense, a clean damp sponge can be used to lift and soften the colour.

Add Dark Walnut sparingly to introduce contrast and depth. Focus on small areas and seams of colour rather than covering large sections of the background. Once the inked background is complete, use a dry sponge to apply Cosmic Shimmer Gold Mica Pigment paint across selected areas. The metallic highlights catch the light beautifully. Allow the background to dry completely before removing the masking tape.

Creating a Lapis-Inspired Background
The second background takes inspiration from lapis lazuli, featuring rich blue tones, subtle white veining and shimmering gold accents. Before adding colour, use a poke tool to score irregular angular lines into the cardstock. These lines will help create the appearance of natural fractures and veins within the stone.

Apply Mediterranean Blue Cosmic Shimmer Water-Based Ink with a damp sponge, varying the intensity of the colour across the background. Some areas should be darker and more saturated, while others remain lighter to mimic the natural variation found in stone. The scored lines will naturally collect more ink, helping to define the fractured appearance. Continue building layers of blue until no white cardstock remains visible.

Using a second sponge, add small amounts of Cosmic Shimmer Gesso to introduce lighter areas of texture. Blend gently to soften the edges while maintaining variation throughout the background. A liner brush can then be used to paint additional fine veins and fractures across the surface, enhancing the realistic stone effect.

Once satisfied with the colour and texture, add subtle seams of Cosmic Shimmer Gold Mica Pigment to replicate the metallic look often seen in lapis lazuli. For extra realism, finish with a gloss spray varnish from a DIY store to give the background a polished stone appearance.

Experiment with Colour
These sponge techniques provide a versatile foundation for cardmaking, mixed media projects, journal pages and home décor. By changing the ink colours and varying the amount of mica pigment, an endless range of effects can be achieved. Whether creating warm fiery textures or elegant stone-inspired finishes, Cosmic Shimmer Water-Based Inks make it easy to build rich, layered backgrounds with professional results.
