Creating a sugar lily can be a delightful addition to any cake, bringing a touch of elegance and natural beauty. This video tutorial will take you through the step-by-step process of crafting a sugar lily, from creating the stamens and petals to the final assembly. The process may seem intricate, but with patience and practice, you will be able to create a stunning sugar lily that will impress anyone who sees it.
Begin by preparing the stamens. Use a number 26 gauge wire, cut into 7cm lengths. Add a small piece of brown paste to the end and press into the stamen section of the lily mold to shape and add detail. Allow these to dry completely.
Next, focus on the centre of the flower. Roll a small piece of paste into a sausage shape, approximately 2.5cm in length. Insert a hooked 24 gauge wire into one end of the paste.
For the petals, condition a small piece of paste and roll it into a carrot shape. Insert a 24 gauge wire into the paste, leaving a mark to indicate how far the wire should be inserted. Flatten the paste and place it into a petal mould. Press the paste into the mould, ensuring it reaches the edges. Remove the petal from the mould and use a ball tool to create a frilled effect on the edges. Bend the wire slightly to give the petal a natural curve and allow it to dry on a former.
The leaves are created in a similar way to the petals. Use a number 10 small piece of paste for the large leaves and a number 8 small piece for the smaller leaves. Flatten the paste and place it into a leaf mould. Press the paste into the mould, ensuring it reaches the edges. Remove the leaf from the mould and use a ball tool to soften the edges. Bend the wire slightly to give the leaf a natural curve and allow it to dry on crate foam.
All elements need to dry completely before colouring assembly. Use the link below to watch part 2 in this series.
